What Can We Learn from Mary About Trusting God?

Mary, the mother of Jesus, is one of the most remarkable figures of the Christian faith. Her life reveals an extraordinary example of obedience, humility, and trust in God—even when faced with situations that seemed challenging and incomprehensible. In this article, we find valuable lessons on how to rely on the Lord in times of uncertainty.

Who Was Mary and Her Journey in the Bible

Mary was a simple young woman from Nazareth, engaged to Joseph. Her life seemed to follow the natural course of the time until the angel Gabriel appeared to her with an astonishing message: she had been chosen by God to be the mother of the Savior (Luke 1:26-38).

This calling brought both honor and challenges. Mary knew that becoming pregnant before marriage would expose her to criticism, suspicion, and even rejection. Still, her response was firm: “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38). This declaration summarizes Mary’s absolute trust in God’s plan, even without fully understanding the details.

Throughout her life, Mary faced difficulties: giving birth in a stable, fleeing to Egypt to protect her son from Herod’s persecution, and later, enduring the indescribable pain of seeing Him crucified. Yet in every stage, Mary remained steadfast, sustained by her faith that God was in control.

Mary’s Example of Trust

Mary’s life teaches us that trusting God does not mean living without difficulties, but rather being confident in His presence during them. Her trust was expressed in three main ways:

  • Obedience – Mary placed no conditions on God’s call. She simply said “yes.”
  • Total Surrender – Even without understanding everything, she trusted that the Lord was guiding her life.
  • Persevering Faith – Mary stayed close to Jesus all the way to the cross, showing that her faith was grounded not in circumstances, but in who God is.

What Can We Learn from Mary?

By looking at Mary’s journey, we discover lessons that can transform our walk with God:

  • Trust God’s plan even when we don’t understand – Faith often brings uncertainties, but Mary shows us that God is always trustworthy.
  • Respond with faith instead of fear – Her response to the angel inspires us to not let doubt keep us from obeying God.
  • Remain steadfast even in times of pain – Just as Mary endured suffering, we can believe that God will strengthen and sustain us through trials.

Application for Our Lives

When we are challenged to trust God—whether in difficult decisions, family struggles, emotional crises, or uncertainty about the future—Mary’s example reminds us that true faith rests on God’s faithfulness, not on our circumstances.

To trust God is to rest in His sovereignty, believe that He fulfills His promises, and surrender completely to His will. Like Mary, we are called to say: “I am the Lord’s servant.”
