What Is the Armor of God in Ephesians 6?

What Is the Armor of God?

The expression appears in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, where he encourages believers to be strong in the Lord to face spiritual warfare:

“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” — Ephesians 6:11

Paul uses the equipment of a Roman soldier as a symbol of the spiritual virtues that every Christian must “wear” daily to resist evil and remain firm in faith.

Why Do We Need This Armor?

The text itself explains that our struggle is not against people, but against spiritual realities:

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world...” — Ephesians 6:12

3. Sandals of the Gospel of Peace

“And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” — Ephesians 6:15

Being ready to share the gospel enables the believer to move forward in the fight. The gospel keeps us firm and gives us purpose.

4. Shield of Faith

“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” — Ephesians 6:16

Faith acts as a shield against doubt, temptation, and lies. Through it, Christians trust, resist, and persevere.

5. Helmet of Salvation

“Take the helmet of salvation...” — Ephesians 6:17

The helmet protects the mind. It represents the certainty of salvation and guards us against deceptive or destructive thoughts.

6. Sword of the Spirit — the Word of God

“...and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” — Ephesians 6:17

The only offensive weapon in the armor. God’s Word is living, effective, and powerful against the lies of the enemy. Jesus Himself used Scripture when tempted (Matthew 4).

Prayer: The Link That Holds the Armor Together

Immediately after describing the armor, Paul instructs:

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests...” — Ephesians 6:18

Prayer strengthens faith, renews the mind, and keeps Christians alert. Without prayer, the spiritual armor loses its effectiveness.

How to Apply the Armor of God Daily?

Applying the Armor of God means living intentionally and consciously every day:
